Why can a vendor “find your brand” in their GEO demo, but your customer can’t reproduce it?
Because a demo can be engineered: a specific account’s personalization, carefully crafted prompts, cached chat history, or a limited search environment can make it look like you are “recommended.” That does not equal a stable, public, and repeatable AI recommendation. What you’re seeing is often “false attribution”—a demo effect, not a repeatable recommendation
In the AI-search era (ChatGPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Perplexity), a vendor may demonstrate that an AI assistant can “find” or “recommend” your company. The key question is whether that result is public, stable, and reproducible for a real buyer using a different account, device, location, and question.
1) Awareness: Why this happens (common demo mechanisms)
- Account-level personalization: the demo uses a logged-in account with prior interactions that bias outputs.
- Prompt engineering: the demo prompt may embed brand clues, synonyms, or constraints that a normal buyer would not use.
- Chat history / cache carryover: earlier turns in the same session “teach” the model your brand context, inflating visibility.
- Limited retrieval environment: the demo may rely on a small, curated dataset, a restricted browsing setting, or a narrow test index that is not equivalent to open web conditions.
Result: the output looks like an AI recommendation, but it may not appear for a new buyer asking a similar question.

Pass condition (practical): your brand appears consistently across models and accounts, and the citations point to your controlled knowledge assets (e.g., official site pages, structured FAQs, technical documents) rather than only the vendor’s environment.
4) Decision: Procurement risk checklist (what to ask any GEO provider)
- Is the outcome reproducible? Ask for a written test plan: models, accounts, regions, number of runs, and reporting format.
- What are the public citation sources? Require a list of domains/URLs where the AI is expected to cite or learn your entity signals.
- What is the optimization metric? “Impressions” alone is not enough; request tracking of AI Recommendation Rate and source attribution.
